PESA / TESA
What is PESA / TESA ?
TESA (Testicular Embryo Stage Transfer) and PESA (Percutaneous Epididymal Sperm Aspiration) are two types of assisted reproductive technologies (ART) used to treat male infertility. TESA is a surgical procedure that involves retrieving sperm from the testes and transferring it to the woman’s uterus. PESA is a procedure that involves retrieving sperm from the epididymis, a tube that stores and transports sperm from the testes to the urethra.
TESA is usually recommended for men with a low sperm count or poor quality sperm. The procedure is often done in conjunction with in vitro fertilization (IVF). The sperm retrieved during TESA is used for fertilizing the egg in the lab. PESA is recommended for men with a blockage in the epididymis or a deficiency in the sperm-producing cells.
During the procedure, a needle is inserted into the epididymis to extract sperm. The sperm retrieved during the PESA procedure can be used for fertilizing the egg in the lab or for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI).
The TESA or PESA procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, and takes about 30-60 minutes to complete. During the procedure, a needle is inserted through the scrotum and into the testicle or epididymis to retrieve a small amount of tissue. This tissue is then examined under a microscope to identify and isolate sperm cells, which can then be used for fertilization. TESA and PESA are generally considered safe and effective procedures, with success rates ranging from 20-60%.
However, it is important to note that these procedures do not guarantee pregnancy, and the likelihood of success can vary greatly depending on the underlying cause of the fertility issues.
